On August 15, 1947 the UK Parliament officially declared India an independent nation no longer under its colonial rule. It would take another two years for the Indian constitution to be ratified. India fought hard to gain its independence with the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.
This is also the day Pakistan was created upon the partition of the two nations into a Hindu (India) and Muslim (Pakistan) majority areas.
Throughout the nation of India this day is celebrated with family gatherings, festivities and kite flying.
